What Shoppers Say About Trainz.com
Trainz.com is rated 2.3 out of 5 by 18 shoppers, and reviews reveal a deeply divided customer base. The store does attract some loyal customers who praise competitive pricing, responsive customer service, and accurate condition grading on items that arrive as described. However, the majority of reviews highlight serious problems with product condition accuracy. Shoppers consistently report that items marked as MINT or in excellent condition arrive with visible damage, broken components, glue residue, paint marks, and nonfunctional electronics that contradict the advertised grading. Several customers note that while the store accepts returns, the underlying issue is that items appear to receive insufficient inspection before shipping.
Beyond condition concerns, additional problems include order fulfillment failures, unresponsiveness to customer inquiries, and cancellations that prevent customers from finding limited-release items elsewhere. The stark split in ratings (50 percent one-star, 22 percent two-star, and 22 percent five-star with no middle ratings) suggests that shopping here carries significant risk. When items do arrive in the condition described, customers are satisfied and appreciate the pricing and service. However, the frequency of condition misrepresentation appears high enough that most shoppers report disappointment.

Sorted by: Most recentI want to be clear that they did give me my money back, which they apparently make a habit of doing. But if you look around at what people say online about train collector forums, you'll see a pattern of wasting people's time. Their grading system is wildly inaccurate, labeling items as new or perfect when they're anything but. I learned this the hard way with a 2000 dollar set they marketed as unopened. It was clearly used, missing manuals and original materials, had broken pieces, a locomotive that was filthy and never cleaned, and several parts that flat out didn't work. Their reps always give the same tired excuse that they had no way of knowing it wouldn't function properly. Other people online report hearing this exact same line. Getting a return label took days of back and forth exchanges, and responses come slowly. They offered 7 percent off as compensation, which I declined. Pretty terrible handling of the situation.
I've made several purchases since the start of this year and the wait times have been frustrating. The website showed everything as in stock when I bought, but delivery took nearly a month. My first order needed five separate shipments to complete, and my second order didn't leave their facility for over a week after I placed it. The real issue is their business model shows items as available when really they're ordering from suppliers themselves. To be fair though, their email support does reply pretty quickly.
Everything went smoothly. The item was reasonably priced, and shipping costs weren't bad even coming from the States. Took a couple weeks to get here, which seemed fair. They gave me tracking details so I could follow along. The package arrived protected well, and the item matched the condition description they had listed.
Their shipping timeline is ridiculous. The site made it seem like delivery would take about 3 days to get to me, but that's clearly not the case. I placed my order in late May and by mid-June it had only made it a few hours from the distribution center. My original delivery window was early June, which came and went without my items. They partner with Pitney Bowes instead of going with major carriers, which seems to be part of the problem. The prices are decent, but at this pace I'll be shocked if I can use my new throttle anytime soon. Looking for a different retailer next time.
Over the years I've bought lots of items from them, and there's been a consistent problem with their grading accuracy. Multiple times I've received pieces marked as original Lionel that turned out to be copies. Most recently I got 3 boxes rated as VG according to their standards, but they had water stains all over them. One had excessive tape applied, and another had water damage that needed repair work that wasn't mentioned anywhere. When I pushed back on the poor grading, they acted like I was the problem instead of fixing their evaluation process. Their membership club isn't worth the cost either.
This was a frustrating experience from start to finish. I ordered train track pieces and paid extra for fast shipping. Instead of sending it to my address like I requested, the customer service team decided to reroute everything to a Walgreens after dragging their feet for days. They acted like it was too much effort to just ship it normally. Definitely stay away from this place. The person named Frankie in their support team made the whole thing even worse.
I had a bad experience with how they treated me. They wouldn't combine purchases into one shipment, forcing multiple charges. The staff was disrespectful and seemed to have issues with international buyers. I'd recommend shopping somewhere else.
