What Shoppers Say About Universal Standard Inc
Universal Standard Inc receives sharply divided reviews, with shoppers either praising the brand's inclusive sizing, quality construction, and style or expressing frustration with customer service and operational issues. Satisfied customers highlight the durability of items like jeans and t-shirts, appreciate the inclusive size range, and note that quality justifies the higher price point when items are purchased on sale. However, dissatisfied reviewers report significant problems including aggressive email marketing that persists despite unsubscribe requests, a return policy that now offers only store credit instead of refunds, difficulty reaching customer support (including a non-functional store location phone number), and quality control issues with surprise boxes that arrive in incorrect sizes. Several customers also mention delayed or dismissive responses to complaints.
The stark rating split suggests Universal Standard delivers strongly on product quality and inclusivity for those seeking their specific style, but operational and communication failures are creating negative experiences that overshadow the brand's strengths for a substantial portion of shoppers. The company's customer service responsiveness and return policy clarity appear to be the primary pain points affecting overall satisfaction.

Sorted by: Most recentI got a $50 off coupon in the mail which seemed generous, so I looked everywhere for an expiration date but found nothing. The top I wanted was out of stock, but it came back a few days later. When I tried to use the coupon, I was told it expired. I looked back at the coupon and still couldn't find any expiration info. I emailed the company and they explained that way down in tiny print in the middle of the email it said the coupon expired that same day at 11:59pm. The font was so small I literally couldn't read it, but I believed them. I replied saying that wasn't fair for a loyal customer, but got no response. You can't even call them on the phone because no one picks up. On top of everything, their prices are ridiculously high. They market themselves as inclusive but want $120 for a top? I'm moving my business elsewhere.
This company is a nightmare. Over two years I've tried to order multiple items but nothing works out. Either what I want is sold out in my size and never comes back, the discounts don't apply in my cart, customer service takes forever to answer questions so I give up, or the coupon codes from their mailers don't work. They seem totally indifferent to customers. The clothing styles are weird and pretty unattractive, and they rely way too heavily on rayon. Their customer service has gone downhill with unhelpful chatbots and generic email replies. I don't trust companies that won't talk to their customers directly, and I'm not sure why I keep checking their website.
Don't fall for this. I bought 2 mystery boxes on February 15th and was only informed after checkout that they could take 4 weeks. I waited and sent several emails asking about my order. All I got back were automated responses saying they were overwhelmed with orders. They shipped a tiny apology box with some cheap laundry soap, a mesh bag, and a mask instead of focusing on getting my actual order out. That was 5 and a half weeks ago and I still haven't gotten my mystery boxes. I used to buy from them regularly and spent good money on their basics like a trench coat, dresses, and tees, but I feel ripped off. They never explained what the real hold-up was. I'm done shopping with Universal Standard.
I paid $75 for a mystery box and took a gamble because they ask about your preferences. I selected bright colors, short sleeves, and casual wear. What showed up? A black long sleeve dress, black mesh piece to go with it, and a white strapless top. That's not what I asked for at all. I specifically said I prefer casual, not dressy. This tells me they just dump whatever they want to get rid of. I emailed to complain and got a generic apology saying they'll pass along my feedback. I wouldn't have spent $75 if I thought they'd ignore my preferences. Don't waste your money.
I've bought tons of stuff from Universal Standard and can't speak highly enough about it. For years I searched for quality plus size minimalist clothing and kept running into ugly prints and frilly designs. US makes well-constructed pieces with premium fabrics that look brand new even after a year if you follow the care instructions. When I've needed to return items for sizing, the process has been smooth and hassle-free.
I'm torn about this company. I ordered 2 mystery boxes and it took over a month to arrive even though customer service kept promising earlier delivery dates. I got a luxe box and a regular surprise box. The luxe box wasn't luxe at all with 5 cheap items just to meet the minimum value requirement. The surprise box had one nicer piece like a trench coat. Everything is well made, but the shipping took forever, customer service gave me the runaround about delays, and stuffing a luxe box with basic tees is disappointing. Maybe I'd give them another chance someday, but not right now.
