BEWARE FOLKS!!

BEWARE FOLKS!!My booking completely changed after confirming my booking from a Dollar text link I received days before my rental to check in! My booking went from a holiday discount of $264.87 per wk, to $1300+ per wk! I was told by dollar customer service, not to worry, they will honor their emailed confirmation of the original booking at the counter, so always keep it saved! I was also reassured by the 800# cust service rep, that Dollar will add a Free driver by showing both our current AAA membership cards, which I was so excited to hear! When I arrived, the counter rep had to manually change the new amount due, to get it close to what I was supposed to pay, which was a few dollars more, but it was still an annoying process to experience that shouldn’t have been given to her to fix to begin with. After getting the new rental amount situated, I then request to add my free driver and show both our AAA cards. Welp.. my counter rep then said, she couldn’t honor the free added driver, bc my booking needed to be booked through AAA and not through Dollar rental. Ughh.. make up your mind Dollar on which it is, bc it’s upsetting to find out when I get to the counter that I’ve now been bamboozled by an 800# cust service rep! The rep never mentioned my booking needed to be booked through AAA to get the free added driver discount. I just needed to show both our AAA cards at the counter and that’s it. Nope.. my frustration came back with a new eye twitch. Yes, I’m still disappointed that Dollar wanted to charge me $15 a day for an added driver after I was reassured it was FREE! NO - DO NOT CLICK any rental car text link to check in!! Yes, it’s always the best feeling to get the cheapest car rental I can find and yes, even a few dollars more messed that up, bc that’s how my twisted mind works. I’m now thinking: this is happening to everyone renting cars: send out text links to check in > modify check in rental agreement > fix at the counter > up charge a few dollars = it’s now a few Dollar win. Thx for coming to my Ted Talk. 12/2025 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone..

Consumer Disrespect

On December 14, 2025, my husband and I made a reservation for a vehicle in the Special category with Dollar car rental, through the Rentcars platform. The vehicle pickup was scheduled for December 23, 2025, at Sacramento International Airport, California. Upon arriving at the rental counter, with all travel logistics previously arranged, we were unexpectedly informed that the security deposit (hold) and insurance charges could only be processed using a credit card issued by a U.S.-based financial institution. We are Brazilian citizens and have been in the United States for approximately one (1) month, a period insufficient for obtaining a local credit card. This requirement was not disclosed at the time of booking, nor was it clearly stated in the contractual terms presented during the reservation process. I would also like to highlight that, about one month ago, during a rental with Hertz Corporation, there were no restrictions on using my international Brazilian credit card to process both the security deposit and insurance fees. The lack of prior notice resulted in significant financial and emotional impacts, as we had confirmed hotel reservations in Lake Tahoe and had planned this trip to fulfill a personal dream, with accommodations paid and family arrangements fully organized. Due to the imposed limitation, we were forced to cancel the vehicle reservation, which ultimately disrupted the entire trip that had been thoroughly structured in advance.Additionally, we have already completed the cancellation process and, to date, are still awaiting the refund of the amount paid, further intensifying our feeling of helplessness and consumer disrespect.Changing commercial conditions without prior notice—especially when it involves restrictions on international credit cards—constitutes a serious breach of the duty to inform, a fundamental principle of consumer rights, and violates the legitimate expectations of the customer, particularly considering that this has never been the historical commercial practice communicated or applied to international reservations.I also acknowledge that the in-person service provided by the Dollar employee was cordial and attentive. However, the agent stated that they were unable to offer any solution due to internal operational constraints, which does not mitigate the company’s responsibility regarding the failure to properly disclose reservation policies. Finally, I express my deep dissatisfaction and indignation with the handling of the reservation process, which has caused logistical, financial, and emotional losses, as well as the frustration of a trip carefully planned for a date of great personal and family significance.

Unfortunately not the greatest…

Unfortunately not the greatest experience! We had to wait 45 minutes for the van rental to get cleaned only to get a used 2023 van rental? Are these cars not supposed to be 2025 at least?? The agent gave us a discount but had I known the car was a 2023, I would have asked for explanation!!

Just a bunch of thieves in Muscat…

Just a bunch of thieves in Muscat airport. If you rent from them, you say goodbye to the 300$ deposit. They never refund you back or even reply your email.Just stay away at all costs. If the Oman government knows how these bastards are messing up tourists experience, they would immediately shut them down and imprison them. Fraudulent company!

Unsafe vehicle, overdue service and no response from Head Office

We are posting this review to warn others based on our direct experience with Hertz / Dollar during an ongoing rental in Australia. From the very beginning, the experience was problematic. At pickup, we were met with an unfriendly and dismissive attitude from two staff members. Only after some time was the rental eventually completed with a third staff member, but the overall impression was already very poor. This was a long-term rental, and it was clearly communicated at pickup that we would be travelling 17,000–20,000 km over several months. This was explicitly discussed and acknowledged, and the vehicle was therefore expected to be suitable for a long-distance journey.According to the service sticker on the windscreen, the next service was due at 38,700 km. We actively asked whether the vehicle would need to be swapped or serviced during the rental due to the long distance planned. This was explicitly denied, as we were told that Hertz/Dollar uses an internal maintenance system that showed the vehicle as serviced and approved. We are now at approximately 53,500 km, meaning the vehicle is operating around 14,700 km beyond the stated service interval.During the rental, we encountered a serious safety issue. We arranged an independent external inspection at Goodyear Autocare, which confirmed that the rear tyres were heavily worn and unsafe, and clearly not suitable for the agreed rental duration and mileage. We were explicitly advised that continuing to drive the vehicle would pose a serious safety risk. Written documentation from this inspection is available.Given both the tyre condition and the overdue service, we can no longer reasonably trust that other safety-critical components, such as the brakes, are in an acceptable condition.Despite this, we were told that all costs for roadside assistance and tyre replacement would be our responsibility, and that we were required to return the vehicle with five fully functional tyres, regardless of the condition of the tyres originally provided. What followed is deeply concerning. The matter was formally escalated to Hertz and Dollar Head Office, Claims and Executive Customer Relations. As of today, there has been no response for six days, while the rental remains active and the vehicle has been independently deemed unsafe. In parallel, we experienced a serious system failure. On 20 December, we received an automated email stating that the vehicle had not been returned, even though we still had almost two weeks remaining on the rental. We had to contact the company ourselves to have this corrected.Due to the complete lack of support and the fact that these safety issues cannot be postponed any further, we are now being forced to resolve the situation ourselves. Since no assistance is being provided, we will have to rent a replacement vehicle from another company for one week, entirely at our own expense, simply to continue our journey safely. From our experience, this represents a systemic failure across customer service, internal systems, escalation handling and safety responsibility.Based on what we have experienced, we would strongly advise against renting with Hertz or Dollar, particularly for long-term rentals or travel involving significant distances.

It's What they Do - Consistently

Fort Myers FL Airport pickup. The Dollar Agent did her best using scare tactics to get me to purchase additional insurance which I clearly declined. A call to Dollar while in FL to extend the rental by one additional day was made with Dollar charging 100% more than the original booking daily rate. An unexpected charge hit my credit card a couple of days after returning home. A call to Dollar for a breakdown of the surprise charge revealed that despite my clear refusal of ANY additional insurance coverage, the Dollar Agent added it in regardless.

I have had horrible customer service with Maria!!

I have had horrible customer service the last two visits to Dollar General! One in Cleveland Ohio and now in the Milwaukee Airport! I have been using Dollar General for close to 10 years and most of the time people were always pretty nice. These last two times it was awful! Both were rude and short with me. Maria at the Mitchel Milwaukee airport was just awful! To start off I went to one lady and she could not log into the program so I stepped over to Maria who was arguing with the lady saying that she COULD log in. So she stated "oh geez" after the lady proved she could not. Told me to wait a minute with an attitude! Maria acted like I was bothering her! It is her job!!! Then she made me feel stupid for asking if Dollar was transferring over to Hertz? She was snotty and rude! Then told me about my rental that it was a Kia Soul. I was disappointed because I don't care for those cars. I asked if there was anything else and she was rude about it. "No not in the midsize". I asked if there was a charge to get anything else. She shook her head yes rudely and said "yeah" in an annoyed manner. I have had seen her be rude to other customers in the past, I guess this time it was my turn! I felt unwelcome and as if I was bothering her! She is a horrible representation for Dollar Rental! She was not friendly at all and just had an awful attitude! I think Dollar/Hertz needs a new lady in the Mitchel Milwaukee airport. People are traveling and usually stressed as travel can be a stressful event and just want to encounter a friendly attitude when picking up their rental. I was VERY disappointed with this pickup! I am a 10 year loyal customer!! I feel I deserve better! Dollar can do better! 😞😞😖

Very disappointing experience

Very disappointing experience. The car provided by Dollar at Amman Airport was already dirty inside and outside at pick-up, and the staff ignored my complaint. At drop-off they charged me an unfair cleaning fee for a condition that existed before I received the car. Customer service was unhelpful and dismissive. DiscoverCars should review this provider because this experience does not match the quality promised.

On a late cold night upon arrival

On a late cold night upon arrival, their ID License reader couldn't "verify" my driver license so they denied giving me my pre-paid rental. The attendants told me they had no idea what was wrong, but that I could get a refund if I called. I said ok that's fine. So I went to another provider and there was no problem at all. I ended up calling to get my refund a week later due to a severe illness I picked up the day after arriving. When I finally came back from near death, I called and was denied a refund because I didn't call for a refund the same day. There was no reasoning with them. If you are going to deny giving me my pre-paid rental, it should be an automatic refund without question. I will never use them again. The other provider turned out to be the same price, but the service was much better. And apparently their tech too.

Dollar Car Rental – Misleading & Exploitative Practices

I rented a car from Dollar in New York and was shocked to receive a PlatePass toll summary filled with random, falsified trips across NY/NJ tunnels and bridges. The car was parked for most of my stay (with receipts to prove it), yet their records claimed daily travel. On days I was at Niagara Falls, they even showed the car driving through Manhattan tunnels.Dollar and PlatePass then threatened me with over $1,000 in tolls, while pushing a $233 “all‑inclusive” fee as the only way out. This is not customer service—it’s intimidation and exploitation of tourists. Their practices are deceptive, unethical, and designed to extort money from unsuspecting customers.Avoid Dollar Car Rental and PlatePass at all costs.
