Direct Energy is rated 2.0 out of 5 by 25 shoppers, with the vast majority expressing strong dissatisfaction. Reviewers consistently complain about high and increasing monthly charges, poor customer service with long wait times and unhelpful representatives, lack of transparency in billing practices (including unauthorized removal of autopay), and unresolved payment issues. Long-term customers report a significant decline in service quality over time. A small minority of reviewers give positive ratings, though their specific feedback is not detailed in recent reviews.
Common frustrations include difficulty reaching competent support staff, inability to speak with corporate representatives, and dismissive or rude treatment from customer service agents. Several reviewers report serious billing problems, including accounts sent to collections despite timely payments. Most one-star reviewers explicitly state they would not recommend Direct Energy and suggest customers explore alternative providers.

Sorted by: Most recentAbsolutely a scam. I visited their site just to get a quote, filled out my information when prompted, and without my approval they activated service. A month later a bill arrived. My place wasn't even ready for power yet. When I called to question this, they said they would investigate. Then they sent me a charge of $148 just to shut everything down.
Really impressed with how this company handled things. The customer service was top notch and they went out of their way to eliminate red tape and give me the support I needed. Solid work!
Fantastic experience here. Their support staff was genuinely excellent and managed to remove unnecessary obstacles so I could get the services I required without any hassle. Well done!
Amazing! The customer service team really impressed me. They were super helpful and went above and beyond to streamline things and get me exactly what I needed. Great work!
They refuse to help you avoid disconnection without paying most of your balance. It's unfair that to get a payment extension you have to fork over almost the complete bill. I'm switching to a different provider that genuinely helps their customers.
They won't help prevent shutoff unless you pay almost everything. It's ridiculous that you have to cover nearly the whole bill to get any kind of payment relief. I'm moving to another company that actually tries to work with customers.
Mysterious charges kept appearing even after my contract expired and I switched companies. When you call to ask what these charges are, they route you to someone who speaks poorly and can't troubleshoot on their own. They basically just recite your bill back and insist every charge is valid. The reps clearly don't comprehend the bill and can't clarify what's being charged. My recommendation: avoid this company entirely!
Very difficult to work with. Even after I cancelled, I kept receiving large invoices. They refused to issue refunds and told me to expect yet another bill before my account could actually be terminated. Keep in mind I had already requested cancellation quite a while back.
Total rip off from start to finish. They tricked me into signing up. A representative at a major retailer kept telling me it was just to get a special offer, absolutely not a signup. I've been arguing about this for months, and finally they admitted knowing about the deception but still demand payment anyway. I cannot stress enough how much I regret this and I'm warning everyone about what a dishonest operation this truly is.
This appears to be outright fraud, and I can't believe these companies operate this way. Regulatory agencies need to investigate this outfit and their related businesses plus their sales tactics. I've been a loyal customer for years, but their account was shut down based on what turned out to be a fraudulent call from another gas provider. When I reached out to explain I was just comparing rates, they said they couldn't help. Turns out they're under the same parent corporation, so they're essentially scamming people by closing and reopening accounts between subsidiaries without permission. That should be criminal. The reps claim they have phone recordings that would prove I never authorized this, yet the manager insists they can't do anything about it.
