What Shoppers Say About Prose
Prose is rated 1.2 out of 5 by 25 shoppers, with the vast majority reporting serious issues with the company's operations and customer service. While some reviewers note that the hair products themselves performed well when received, this positive is overwhelmed by widespread complaints about billing problems (including unauthorized charges and double-billing on subscriptions), unresponsive customer service, extremely long shipping delays, and orders that never arrive. Multiple shoppers report months-long waits with no updates and unsuccessful attempts to contact the company through email or other channels.
Beyond service failures, reviewers also report product performance issues including hair that became drier and coarser after use, and problems with the questionnaire system that claims to customize products for mixed hair types but only allows selection of a single hair type. The combination of operational dysfunction, unresolved billing disputes, and inability to reach customer support has led shoppers to characterize the company as unreliable and poor value for the premium pricing charged.

Sorted by: Most recentThe products work great for my hair and have really helped with my issues. My only problem is I keep getting charged twice every month since I set up my subscription. I've tried reaching out for help but can't get anyone to explain what's happening. Can someone actually respond and fix this?
Terrible experience. I canceled my subscription two years ago and somehow they decided to send me 80 dollars worth of stuff I never ordered. I've tried emailing them over and over but get nothing back. Even the BBB couldn't help. I'm going to have to get a new debit card because of this. I have no idea how this company stays open. Oh, and they don't have a customer service phone number. They're awful.
The shipping takes forever. I've been waiting two months just for my first order and they won't even cancel it for me. I will never buy from this place again.
This line dried out my hair. I have 2c curls and got the shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner, curl cream, and curl gel. After two uses I gave up. The conditioner was hard to get through my hair when I was washing, and using all these products made my hair drier and coarser. Store brands work way better for me. It's not worth spending that much money just to make my hair struggles worse.
Like many others here, I've been waiting ages for my order with nothing arriving. Zero updates on what's going on. I've messaged them multiple times and their responses are unhelpful and full of typos. They just send you their standard sorry you're disappointed speech and that's it. For the price they charge, this service is way below what you'd expect.
Their marketing shows people with mixed hair types, both straight and curly, saying they can create solutions for that. But their questionnaire doesn't actually let you select multiple hair types. You can only pick one, which doesn't work if you have both textures like many people do. My hair ended up super tangled because of this. I can get much better results with drugstore conditioner for under 10 dollars a bottle in a way bigger size. Why would anyone spend this much money on something that doesn't even work?
Do not order from this company. Forget about whether the product works or not, their customer service and sales tactics are so shady that it doesn't matter. I ordered on December 26 and didn't get it until late January. When I finally got to try it a few times, my skin got itchy and red with breakouts, and my hair felt gunky with an irritated scalp. Then at the end of the month they charged me for a renewal without any warning or reminder, which I've never seen before with other subscriptions. Getting them to honor their 30-day satisfaction guarantee is almost impossible. They make you email them, then pass you around to different departments that either don't read your emails or purposely ignore them to wear you down until you give up.
I bought just shampoo and conditioner, but when my package got here it also had vitamins inside. I found out later that the conditioner had something I'm allergic to in it. To make it worse, I was charged for a vitamin subscription that I never signed up for. When I called customer service to cancel that subscription and explain about my allergy, they said everything was already being shipped and charged so they couldn't stop it.
I genuinely want to love this company, and for the most part I kind of do. I have bleached, porous 3b/3c curly hair and live somewhere humid, so I look for products with slip and moisture that seal hair and cut down on frizz. Prose really delivers on the products themselves. The leave-in conditioner is incredible with amazing slip, moisture, and curl definition. The custom conditioner is among the best I've ever used on my hair type. The masque works great and is really moisturizing. The scalp oil is balanced and works well. The shampoo and gel are decent but not amazing. The scents all smell good, and the products work well for curly hair. If this was just about product quality, I'd give five stars. But the customer service is surprisingly bad. They don't have a phone line, there's no live chat or chatbot, and email help is slow and unhelpful. Managing orders and subscriptions is way harder than it needs to be. When things go wrong with your subscription, which they do, there's no real way to get help quickly. The stress completely ruins the experience.
I really want to like this brand, and in some ways I do. Here's what works: I have very porous, bleached 3b/3c curly hair in a humid climate, so I need products with good slip and moisture that tame frizz. Their leave-in conditioner is amazing with excellent slip and curl definition. Their custom conditioner is also top-notch and probably the best I've tried for my hair. The masque is really nourishing and does what it's supposed to. The scalp oil is effective and well balanced. The shampoo and gel are fine but nothing special. All the scents are really nice. If I was only judging the actual products, this would easily be five stars. The problem is customer service is incredibly frustrating. There's no phone number to call, no live chat, no chatbot. Email support is slow and doesn't help. It's a hassle to manage your subscriptions and orders. When something goes wrong with your subscription, which happens a lot, there's basically no way to get quick help. It just stresses you out.
