What Shoppers Say About Rural King
Rural King receives highly polarized reviews, with roughly equal shares of enthusiastic five-star ratings and frustrated one-star complaints. Shoppers consistently praise the in-store staff for being helpful and friendly, with several mentioning exceptional service from specific employees and quick turnarounds on repairs. However, a significant portion of reviews express serious concerns about order fulfillment errors, inventory management (particularly online orders shipped incorrectly or cancelled after payment), customer service responsiveness, and inflexibility on warranty or return issues.
Recurring problems include online orders arriving with wrong items, delayed communication about inventory problems, difficulty activating credit cards, and perceived indifference from customer service when issues arise. Some reviewers also note that crowded aisles during peak seasons make shopping difficult. While in-store experiences with staff tend to be positive, the backend operations around fulfillment, customer service, and problem resolution appear to be where many customers encounter frustration.

Sorted by: Most recentWatch out with the Cross Lanes location. They sold me a riding lawn mower claiming it was in stock ready for pickup when it absolutely was not. They took my payment through the website just fine but then cancelled the order saying they didn't have it, never offered to order one, and basically had no clue how to fix the situation. My money got held up and I still don't have a refund four days later. Worse part is they're still advertising that same mower on the website showing it in stock for pickup. This is some really shady business practice if you ask me.
The folks working at their 800 number customer service are impossible to work with. They messed up a straightforward order and cost me 220 bucks. Seven identical shirts and they couldn't get it right. If you check their reviews you'll see tons of single star ratings just like mine. Stores are closing because barely anyone wants to shop there. I'm completely done with this company and won't be back.
Ordered some game cameras online and five days later they still haven't shipped. Their customer service line isn't even open. Called the store that my order supposedly came from and they have zero information about it. Tried to save a few bucks and now I'm stuck waiting with no answers on why nothing's been sent out.
The Franklin location has a manager who doesn't seem to care one bit about his team. They engage in unfair practices when it comes to how employees are handled.
Bought a handgun here that turned out to be defective and their customer service has been terrible. Seems like nobody in the gun section even knows how to handle shipping a firearm back for warranty claims. Don't buy guns from this place, go to a real gun shop instead. My son's Christmas gift was ruined and we still can't get it fixed. I won't shop here again.
Joining the one star club here. Last night I filled up my online cart with a bunch of stuff but spent an hour trying to finish the purchase and got nowhere. PayPal didn't work, then my Visa card didn't cooperate either even though both work fine everywhere else. A chat option popped up so I used that, but they said they'd email and call me, which never happened. This morning I tried their phone line and got stuck on hold for 38 minutes before giving up. Others are reporting the same problem which is why their reviews are so bad. I called our closest store about 90 miles away and talked to an assistant manager who actually said she hates getting calls about online ordering problems because there are so many. Tried reaching corporate in Illinois and just kept getting transferred to dead ends with nobody to actually talk to. Finally emailed asking them to shut down my account and remove me from everything. They have good product selection and decent pricing but if they'd fix their website and answer their phones they might actually be worth shopping with again.
I used to really dislike Rural King a few years back. The Niles store was filthy, disorganized, and the staff seemed lazy. Then I heard the manager got fired. About six months later I gave it another try and the place looked so much better. The employees aren't exactly hustling now but they're definitely not useless anymore. I actually look forward to shopping there these days and tell people about it.
I'm really let down by Rural King and their lack of organization. Placed an order on October 9th for a birthday gift. By October 23rd still no shipping notification. I finally called and cancelled, asking them to refund to a gift card instead. They'd bounced my item between three different warehouses and my money still hasn't been returned. Would not recommend shopping there.
Found a pair of Ariat shoes I wanted to buy but when I got home they felt a bit snug because my feet were slightly swollen. I knew they had my size in stock from earlier that day so I called ahead to make sure before driving down. I explained that I loved them but needed a larger size and didn't want to waste the trip if they didn't have it. The employee told me they couldn't hold items which is fair, but what really bothered me is she wouldn't even go look to see if they had any in the bigger size! By the time I got there they'd sold out. That's not good customer service at all. Now I have to return both pairs.
Their website checkout is an absolute nightmare. I kept having to enter my address and payment information repeatedly only to get error messages saying I hadn't selected a billing address. This happened at least five times in a row. I'm genuinely worried my credit card information got compromised somehow. Whoever coded that part of their site clearly has no idea what they're doing when it comes to security.
