Books-A-Million Reviews
What Shoppers Say About Books-A-Million
Books-A-Million receives overwhelmingly negative feedback from shoppers, with 19 reviews averaging 1.3 out of 5. The most common complaints center on order management issues, including unexplained pre-order cancellations without adequate notice, charges for out-of-stock items that are never received, and unresponsive customer service that fails to resolve problems through website or phone support. Shoppers also report aggressive email marketing with 10 to 20 unwanted emails per week, non-functional unsubscribe options, unexpected tax charges on religious texts, and newly implemented paid bag charges that feel like nickel-and-diming customers.
A small number of shoppers acknowledge occasional good deals on books, and one five-star review appears in the dataset, but these positive experiences are vastly outnumbered by complaints. The recurring theme across negative reviews is a perception that the company prioritizes collecting payment over fulfilling orders or respecting customer preferences, combined with customer service that either ignores problems or deflects them to banks for dispute resolution.

Sorted by: Most recentBought a couple of bibles and got slapped with tax charges. In all my years working retail at a bookstore, religious texts were never taxed. Called to dispute it but nobody ever called me back. Really disappointed by the lack of follow-up.
I'm giving them two stars only because I've managed to snag some decent deals on items before. However, my last couple of pre-orders from months back got canceled without warning, supposedly out of stock. They should either let customers pay extra to secure items or give plenty of notice if they won't carry something. Instead they just killed the orders right when things launched, and now I can't find it anywhere. Stuck paying way too much from resellers now. Really frustrated with how they handled this.
Total mess of a company. Put in an order and got a message the same day saying something wasn't in stock. They won't cancel orders same-day even when items are unavailable, so I got charged full price for stuff I never received. No fixes available through their website or phone support. Staff actually suggested disputing it with my bank since that's apparently the only way anything gets resolved with this poorly operated business. When they finally shipped the other items, the packaging job was embarrassing, like someone with zero experience did it. After eight days sitting in that terrible packing, the item arrived damaged. Since it's a collectible, the damage basically destroyed its value. I'm done with them. A quick search beforehand would've shown how terrible their online service really is.
They're trying but fall short on delivery. Bought over $200 worth of books in store today. At checkout, learned they've stopped giving out bags for free since going 'green.' Bags are now for sale of course. This is just one example of their declining customer service. Got home and checked my receipt, noticed they charged $175 for something labeled $167. Shouldn't have to watch the register that closely.
Their email list is impossible to quit. Getting flooded with 10 to 20 emails weekly. It's way too much. The unsubscribe function just doesn't work, even though I'm not even signed up as a member. Really aggravating.
Can't escape their email assault. Getting anywhere from 10 to 20 emails every week. It's overwhelming. The unsubscribe link doesn't work and I'm not even a member. Seriously annoying.
Don't buy from here. Ordered a book and got silence for over a month. Support gave me contradictory answers when I followed up. First rep said refund approved, second rep completely denied it. This level of inconsistency and poor service is unacceptable.
Skip ordering from this place. I bought a book and waited over a month without any response. When I finally reached out to support, one person promised me a refund. But the next rep I talked to refused to honor it. The constant back and forth and poor handling of my case was exhausting.
This is infuriating. My pre-sale book order from nearly a year ago finally got ready to ship, but not before I moved. I made sure to clean up my account by removing the old address and confirming my new location was the only one saved. Checked it multiple times. They shipped it to an address that shouldn't even exist on my account and won't take responsibility. Why allow address updates if they don't stick? Not coming back here.
What a disaster. I ordered a pre-sale book nearly a year ago and it's still sitting there. I've relocated since then and made sure to update my account, deleting old addresses so only my new one remained. I checked several times to confirm the change went through. Then suddenly they email saying it's shipping. Guess where? To my old address that wasn't even listed anymore. They act like it's my fault for moving. Why did they let me change the address if it doesn't actually work? Never ordering here again.
