Books-A-Million Reviews
What Shoppers Say About Books-A-Million
Books-A-Million receives overwhelmingly negative feedback from shoppers, with 19 reviews averaging 1.3 out of 5. The most common complaints center on order management issues, including unexplained pre-order cancellations without adequate notice, charges for out-of-stock items that are never received, and unresponsive customer service that fails to resolve problems through website or phone support. Shoppers also report aggressive email marketing with 10 to 20 unwanted emails per week, non-functional unsubscribe options, unexpected tax charges on religious texts, and newly implemented paid bag charges that feel like nickel-and-diming customers.
A small number of shoppers acknowledge occasional good deals on books, and one five-star review appears in the dataset, but these positive experiences are vastly outnumbered by complaints. The recurring theme across negative reviews is a perception that the company prioritizes collecting payment over fulfilling orders or respecting customer preferences, combined with customer service that either ignores problems or deflects them to banks for dispute resolution.

Sorted by: Most recentMy 14-year-old went to the store to buy a toy and walked out with a National Geographic subscription she never wanted. This is unacceptable. Staff practically forced it on her and she didn't know how to say no. Now there have been multiple charges and I can't get anyone to help cancel it. I've called repeatedly, sent messages and emails but keep getting brushed off. How is this even legal?
My teenager picked up a toy at their store and somehow left with a subscription to National Geographic she never agreed to. She's only 14 and the staff pushed it on her without her really understanding. There have been multiple charges already! I've tried calling customer support, leaving messages, sending emails, but keep getting the runaround. This is unacceptable and I need to cancel immediately.
This company really let me down. Placing an order with them was a huge disappointment from start to finish.
Bought a bible as a Christmas gift for my granddaughter at a store location in Florida. Two months later the pages are coming loose from the binding. Went back to exchange it since the bible is clearly defective. The worker refused because I had written my name, my granddaughter's name and the date inside. Apparently that means they can't reshelve it. But the product was broken to begin with and wouldn't have been on the shelf anyway if they'd checked it properly. I'm a regular member who shops there frequently and felt completely dismissed. They didn't care that I had a legitimate complaint. I ended up buying another bible there to replace it, but I'm really disappointed in how they handled this and will probably shop elsewhere going forward.
Placed a pre-order two months in advance and waited patiently. Then boom, canceled out of nowhere. Their excuse was they over-ordered and stopped carrying it. But I ALREADY PAID! They made zero effort to fix the situation or offer alternatives. Completely unacceptable.
Don't waste your money on expedited shipping. Ordered with second day air and four days later during business days, still no shipment. Won't be ordering from them again. Amazon is way more reliable.
Our local store removed the coffee shop and seating area they used to have. Won't be back. From what I can see in the parking lot, the writing's on the wall for this location.
Major red flags here. Found a super hard-to-locate book that I was searching everywhere for, and somehow they had it. But the price seemed way off. It originally cost around $45 back in 2007, yet I'm seeing used copies selling for $180 to $200 on other sites. That's a huge warning sign something's off. I came here to check if they're legitimate before buying and glad I did my homework first. Saved myself from what could've been a bad deal.
