Hot Topic, Inc Reviews
What Shoppers Say About Hot Topic, Inc
Box Lunch has an extremely poor reputation among shoppers, rated 1.3 out of 5 by 19 reviewers. The dominant complaints center on billing failures: multiple reviewers report being charged twice or more for cancelled orders, with refunds taking months or never materializing. Additional recurring issues include misleading pricing (items charged at full price despite showing discounts online), restrictive promotion terms (free items cancelled on buy-one-get-one deals, store credit unusable on most products), inventory problems (items listed as in stock but unavailable for pickup or delivery), and unresponsive customer service with inadequate contact options.
Very few shoppers report positive experiences. One reviewer gave four stars, noting that all interactions were positive but wishing the online inventory were available in physical stores. The overwhelming pattern in reviews is frustration with billing practices, lack of transparency in pricing and promotion mechanics, failure to fulfill orders, and difficulty resolving issues with customer support. Shoppers describe the operation as unreliable and advise others to avoid the platform.

Sorted by: Most recentThe box showed up completely damaged and they basically said tough luck. These people have no clue about collectibles and don't give two cents about customers. I'm never ordering from them again.
I placed three orders, and since I'm Canadian shipping to a US address, my billing and shipping are naturally different. Only one got shipped. The other two were cancelled. Called to speak with a manager and found out the issue was the address mismatch. She said there's nothing she can do about it. So what, I can never send someone a gift directly to their home? I can never use a PO box? This is absolutely insane business practice.
Customer service here is the worst. They'll make up fake expiration dates on coupons and refuse to honor what they actually promised.
I've shopped at this Box Lunch location multiple times and usually it's fine, but there was this one employee who gave me the creeps and was super rude. She's probably new, but I'm definitely not going back. She kept staring at me and my grandmother in this weird way that made both of us uncomfortable and upset. I've had great interactions with their staff before, but this person completely ruined the experience. I'm taking my business elsewhere.
Warning to all shoppers: be extremely careful here. The return and refund process is designed to make your life miserable. I bought two shirts right before Christmas and wanted to cancel the same day. They refused, saying it was already in the warehouse, so tough luck. I had to pay for something I didn't want, wait for delivery, then return it. And after I got the refund, I had to wait up to 30 days. I sent it back on December 23rd with tracking confirmation it arrived on the 26th, but a full month later still no refund. When I called, a customer service person actually laughed at me and asked why I bought something I didn't want. I'm filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and urge others to do the same.
I used my rewards points to cover half my order, but when I tried using coupons for the second half, they wouldn't let me. The product wasn't on any promotion and was full price, yet they said coupons couldn't be applied. Their site claims you can cancel within 30 minutes, but that's complete garbage. I tried multiple times to cancel the rewards portion and even called customer service, but they said they couldn't cancel it either. A customer service department not being able to cancel an online order - I've never heard of that before Box Lunch. Now I'm stuck with a product that's useless without the other part and can't return it because I didn't pay cash. This isn't my first bad experience with them, but it'll be my last. They're basically running a scam.
How is this company even still operating? I ordered three items online and two shipped while my PayPal transaction showed completed. Four days later I got an email saying the third item couldn't be fulfilled. Since I used PayPal, I had to get a refund - but it was only for 2/3 of that item's cost. When I contacted Box Lunch, some employee gave me a ridiculous response about credit cards and told me to contact my card company, except I paid with PayPal and didn't even have a card linked to my account. His answer made zero sense. Box Lunch is basically Hot Topic's way of selling cheaper stuff they can't move in stores. I regret not reading the reviews first before throwing my money away.
Hands down the absolute worst shopping experience I've ever had online. Seriously, do not order from Box Lunch. I ended up with duplicate orders, never got confirmation emails, and couldn't even log into my account to see what was happening. The website kept rejecting my password, and somehow they had the wrong phone number attached to everything. I was on hold forever and emailed them twice but got nowhere. The whole website is a disaster. Skip this place entirely and shop elsewhere.
Love what Box Lunch has to offer and would shop at their physical stores anytime, but their online ordering is a nightmare. My orders got canceled twice - once with my card and once when my partner tried ordering with his. I reached out to their support team and they responded pretty quickly, but their explanation was frustrating. They kept canceling because my shipping and billing addresses didn't match, claiming the address wasn't legitimate. This is a terrible business strategy, especially for someone like me who deals with anxiety and struggles to shop in person. Thankfully I managed to use my Box Lunch credit to complete a purchase before I gave up on ordering online.
