What Shoppers Say About pitboss-grills.com
Pit Boss Grills receives overwhelmingly negative feedback from shoppers, with 20 reviews averaging 1.5 out of 5. The most common complaints center on quality control issues present immediately upon purchase (paint defects, rust, manufacturing defects), premature component failures (control board failures, auger motor failures, heating element issues within one to four uses), and inadequate customer service when seeking warranty support or replacements. Shoppers report that replacement parts are difficult to obtain, come without adequate installation instructions, and that customer service representatives are unhelpful or unwilling to work with customers on warranty claims or replacement part costs. Several reviewers mention cold weather performance problems and note that warranty coverage excludes cosmetic damage. A small minority of reviewers appear satisfied with their purchases, but they represent only 10 percent of the feedback received.
The recurring theme across negative reviews is that Pit Boss grills fail to meet basic reliability expectations for their price point (units costing over $1,600), with multiple shoppers reporting that the same component failures have occurred on multiple units they have owned. Customers express frustration that control board replacements cost $135 and that customer service offers little support beyond suggesting accessory items like seasoning packs as compensation. Many reviewers explicitly recommend switching to competitors like Traeger or Camp Chef based on their negative experiences.

Sorted by: Most recentBought a brand new grill straight from the store. Right out of the box it had paint defects and was already starting to rust. When I called about warranty coverage they said no, cosmetic damage doesn't count. Then they said they'd send me replacement parts, but now they tell me those parts aren't even available. So I'm stuck with a brand new grill that's defective and they won't fix it.
Total waste of money. My advice is stay away from Pit Boss smokers. When you actually need the thing to work, it doesn't. I'm completely done with this brand. Customer service wasn't helpful at all. The unit has issues in cold weather. I bought and installed a replacement part last year and got a couple uses out of it over summer. Now that we're back in cold season, it failed again. Over it.
My Pit Boss series 1600 pro quit working after just four uses. The auger motor completely failed. They sent me a replacement part but zero instructions. Looked it up online and it's apparently a 20-plus step process to replace. I'm already an hour deep and still not close to getting it done. Over $1600 down the drain. Don't buy this.
This is a joke. Bought the Laredo at a big box retailer. Had to replace two boards, a wiring harness, and a heating element and it still keeps flashing error codes. I'm tired of troubleshooting this thing like I work there. Switching to Trager or Camp Chef. Oh and they offered me a pack of seasoning for my troubles. Real helpful when the grill doesn't even work.
Owned two of these Pit Boss grills and neither one lasted. Both were registered, and both had their control boards crap out within two seasons of normal use. Called up their customer service to see about replacement boards and got nowhere. They expected me to pay $135 for a new one and weren't willing to negotiate or help. This will definitely be my last Pit Boss purchase.
I've gone through two Pit Boss grills now, and honestly I'm done. Both units had their control boards fail within just a couple of seasons of use, even though I registered them. When I reached out about getting replacement boards, customer service basically gave me the runaround. They wanted me to drop $135 on a new board. That's going to be my last purchase from this brand.
Dropped $1500 on this bbq and smoker combo and it was a disaster right out of the box. The packaging was terrible and it showed up damaged in multiple spots with parts missing. I called Pit Boss and they basically said no warranty coverage, just paint over it yourself. This was my third one from them and absolutely the last. Not going back.
I've had two defective control boards fail on my Pit Boss in less than two years. When they send you replacements, you're basically on your own to figure out the installation and do all the work yourself.
Just got off the phone with someone from Pit Boss and I'm pretty frustrated. My smoker quit heating up after barely being used once. The drip pan is stuck and won't come out. I told the rep I wasn't comfortable trying to fix this myself because of safety concerns like fire or explosion. Instead of sending someone out, he kept telling me to take it back to the store. Here's the kicker though - the manual actually says don't return it to the store. Even his supervisor gave me the same answer and wouldn't even introduce himself. I had to borrow a truck just to get this thing home in the first place. For something that cost over $400, I shouldn't have to jump through these hoops or risk my safety doing repairs I'm not trained for. I want either my money back or a fully assembled replacement unit. They've got all my info on file already.
Really disappointed with the Sportsmans smoker and grill combo I picked up. From day one, this smoker just dries out all the meat no matter what I do. Sure, I get a nice smoke ring and the flavor is there, but the meat ends up tough and dry. I've tried every technique in the book - smoking at 225, wrapping at the right temp, injecting, water trays - nothing works. The unit runs too hot and pulls moisture out. Other folks I know with the same model have the same problem. I've already wasted some really good briskets on this thing. Time to invest in a different smoker.
