What Shoppers Say About United
United is rated 1.5 out of 5 by 19 shoppers, with a heavily polarized response: the vast majority of reviewers report significant service failures. Common complaints include flight delays and missed connections with poor rebooking options, denied compensation claims with inconsistent treatment of passengers, unresponsive or rude customer service representatives, lounge access issues, and unresolved refund promises. Reviewers describe frustration with lack of accountability and transparency when issues occur. A small segment of reviewers report positive experiences, though these lack detail.
The overwhelming pattern across reviews suggests systemic problems with customer service consistency, compensation claim handling, and follow-through on promises made by agents. Many reviewers indicate they would not use United again due to their experiences with delays, rebooking failures, and unresolved refund requests.

Sorted by: Most recentMy flight from Newark to Panama City got delayed over two hours in March. On top of that, they sent us to three different gates. When I filed a claim with United, they said I wasn't eligible for compensation even though other passengers on the same flight got food vouchers. I'd really like an explanation for why my claim got denied while others didn't.
Got to the Houston airport with plenty of time to spare and checked in at the premium counter since I'm a Star Alliance Gold member. The lounge was shut down with only a QR code posted for support. The first agent actually mocked me, saying go ask Delta to let you in, then hung up on me. The second agent named Danielle was even worse, saying I had no right to ask for options, called me greedy and entitled, and kept insisting she was just looking to grab freebies. She was rude from start to finish and claimed there was no manager available. The closed lounge itself wasn't really the issue, but how I was treated was completely unacceptable. Both staff members were dismissive and mean. United really needs to train their employees on how to talk to customers. Also, Star Alliance members pay for lounge access, so when yours is closed, at least offer an alternative or show some basic respect instead of attitude. Neither happened here.
My flight was delayed and I missed my connecting flight. At the help desk, a United agent personally gave me two choices: wait several days for another flight or take a train, and they promised a complete refund. We went with the train based on that assurance. Weeks went by with no refund, and after I followed up multiple times, all I got was a hundred dollar credit to use on their website that expires in a year. That's not acceptable. Under European passenger rules, when there's a major delay or cancellation, customers are supposed to get cash back, not a travel voucher, unless they specifically agree to it first, which we never did. We wasted time, spent our own money, and lost trust. This was terrible service with basically no customer support and zero respect for passengers. Don't believe their promises because if something goes sideways, don't count on them following through. We're still waiting to hear back from them.
Our September 10th flight was good in terms of flight crew service, but the booking side was a disaster. Bad weather made us miss the original Tokyo to Chitose flight and no other carrier could get us there. United did email us and notify us through the app about a new booking three days later. When we showed up at the airport on the 14th, they said we weren't on any flight. We showed them the confirmation email and what was showing in the app, but the system had no record of us. After some back and forth, they finally let us wait standby that day. It was frustrating and honestly shook our confidence in whether we can rely on United going forward.
I will never fly with United again. I had to buy a last minute ticket and both the website and app said the flight departed that day at 1pm, so I made it through security and waited for boarding. When I scanned my boarding pass at the gate, they suddenly told me my seat was already assigned to someone else and they wouldn't let me on the plane. I was absolutely devastated because I missed getting to Missouri and couldn't help with my brother's wedding prep. I spent $300 and they offered to put me in their top lounge and promised reimbursement, but nothing happened. It's been weeks with zero follow-up. I'm done with United and I feel bad for anyone who continues flying them.
Terrible rates on a one way ticket. I called customer service to convert my return flight to just one way, and shockingly they charged me MORE for the one way option than what I was originally paying for the round trip.
Can't get through the booking process on the website from any device. After dealing with constant issues, I'm switching to a different airline.
The website won't let me complete a flight booking no matter what device I use. After wrestling with this frustrating mess, I'm switching airlines for good.
